Social Media, Are You Talking to Yourself?
Monday, March 30, 2009 at 19:13 My husband has lately been watching alot of CNBC and occasionally I will watch it also. I once commented to my husband that it is like they are talking to each other in a language that I don't understand half the time. That got me thinking that it is like that for my husband when I talk about social media. My husband is a smart guy, but he is a bit of a luddite when it comes to technology. I am sure that when I talk about social media like Twitter or Friendfeed to him, it is like I am also speaking a foreign language. Words like Retweet, followers, likes, twitpic, twitchat have as much meaning to him as the direction on the back of a noodle package written in Korean does to me. I mean I know the direction have something to do with noodles, just as he knows that the conversation has to do with computers, but that is as far as both of our understandings go. What I am trying to say is that it is important to remember, that there is a world outside of the social media that goes along daily quite fine without it. A lot of times those of us involve in social media are talking to each other and our perspectives maybe a little distorted. Do not assume that just because you and your friends are doing something that the rest of the world has caught up. It is too easy and even dangerous to believe that your what your circle thinks is how the world sees things.
